The Erie Community Foundation

The Erie Community Foundation is home to 105 donor named scholarships, and each has its own eligibility and criteria requirements. Many scholarships target students graduating from specific high schools, some for specific areas of study and others for financial need. Each scholarship is unique according to its donor's wishes, and each offers the opportunity to earn a scholarship for your education.

To obtain an application for any of the scholarships listed alphabetically below, please contact your high school guidance office, college financial aid office, or other organization listed as part of the How to Apply information that is provided at the end of each scholarship description below.

The We Believe in Erie Fund

Eligibility:
  • The Greater Erie Economic Development Corporation (GEEDC) and the Erie Community Foundation (ECF) have made funds available to local minority youth in Erie County specifically for the purpose of providing services in areas of unmet needs
  • Applicants must be a minority, between the ages of 18-25, and resident of Erie County.
  • Students pursuing post-secondary education, pre-apprenticeship training, and internships are eligible to apply.

Academy High School Class of 61 Memorial Scholarship

  • Awarded to a graduating senior attending Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy, Erie, PA
  • Must be accepted to a four-year college

Accudyn Products, Inc. Scholarship

Eligibility:
  • First preference shall be given to Accudyn employees and qualified lineal descendants or Accudyn employees. Second preference shall be given to graduating high school seniors at Cathedral Prep, Mercyhurst Prep, and Villa Maria High School in Erie County, PA

AJO Forever Scholarship

Amount: Determined Annualy

Eligibility:
  • Must intend to pursue a Nursing Degree
  • Must be a well rounded high school student who is involved in high school activities, community activities, church activities and/or has a part time job
  • The applying student should submit an essay on why he or she would like to become a nurse
  • Must include at least one letter of recommendation
  • Scholarships are awarded based on character, scholastic achievement and community involvement

  • This scholarship is intended to benefit, encourage, and assist students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis and an IEP or 504 seeking higher education and/or job training.
  • All candidates are eligible, preference and special consideration will be given to those individuals with a current Autism Society NWPA membership

Louis W. Balmer Erie Engineering Societies Council Scholarship

Amount: Up to $3,500 per School

  • Must be a resident of the Northwestern PA geographical area.

Christopher G. Batchelor Memorial Scholarship

Amount: Determined Annually

  • Must be a member of the tennis team.
  • Selection will be based on academic achievement and school spirit.

Amount: Standard Scholarships: $2,000 - $4,000 (renewable) - Achievement Scholarships: over $4,000 (renewable)

Eligibility:
  • Awarded to graduating seniors attending high schools in Erie County, Pennsylvania.
  • First preference is given to lineal descendants of former employees of Hammermill Paper Company or its corporate successor, International Paper Company who reside in Erie County. Second preference is given to other graduating seniors in Erie County.
  • The scholarship is awarded based on financial need and scholastic achievement.
  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better and a minimum combined Verbal and Mathematics SAT score of 1100.
  • Advisory committee generally limits eligibility to the children of parents whose combined income is below $80,000/year.
  • Must apply on-line to be considered for a scholarship.

Eda Camphausen Law Scholarship

Amount: Determined Annually (renewable – amount may vary)
Deadline: May 15
Eligibility:
  • Must be a resident of Erie County, Pennsylvania.
  • Must be a first-year student at Harvard University Law School.
  • Must be the student from Erie County, Pennsylvania obtaining the highest LSAT for the year of admission.
  • Names of qualified recipients will be submitted to the President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for final approval.

Eda Camphausen Music Scholarship

Eligibility:
  • Student must be a music major at Edinboro or Mercyhurst University
  • This scholarship alternates between the Universities each year (2018- Edinboro; 2019- Mercyhurst)

Lovisa Card Catlin Art Scholarship

Amount: Determined Annually
Deadline: April 15th
Eligibility:
  • Applicant must be a graduating senior from a public or private high school in Erie County, Pennsylvania.
  • Must be pursuing secondary study in the field of art, architecture or industrial art.
  • Applicants are required to submit up to six of the best examples of their work in a jpeg format on a CD along with a completed application form.

Carlson Family Scholarship

Amount: Determined Annually
Deadline: April 15
Eligibility:
  • This scholarship is intended to benefit current employees of 4 Front Solutions, formerly AccuSpec Electronic, LLC and their descendants, provided that the employee has at least one uninterrupted year of service in good standing.
  • Descendants of retired AccuSpec employees are also eligible, provided the retiree was employed by AccuSpec in good standing for at least three years consecutively.

Carpenters Local 81 Scholarship

Amount: Two 2,000 scholarships per year
Deadline: April 30
Eligibility:
  • Applicant must be a child or grandchild of a member (in good standing) of Carpenters Local 81
  • Must be graduating or have graduated from a High School in Erie, Crawford, Warren or Venango Counties in PA, Ashtabula County in Ohio, or Chautauqua County in New York. Recipients must also be residents of one of these counties.
  • Scholarship recipients must present their letter of acceptance from an accredited four year college or university.
  • Applicants must have an excellent attendance record with at least a 3.0 GPA, demonstrated commitment to community service and have a demonstrated need for financial support.
  • It is required that you submit an essay of approximately 250 words describing the impact of Carpenters local 81 on the applicant’s family life and how the scholarship will affect their academic career.

  • Must be a full-time student at Gannon University or Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA, pursuing a career in the sciences or education

The Inja & Kwang Choi, MD Family Scholarship

Amount: Determined Annually
Deadline: April 15
Eligibility:
  • This award benefits seniors of Meadville Area High School, Cochranton Junior-Senior High School, Conneaut Area Senior High School and Saegertown Junior Senior High School who plan to study medicine or engineering upon graduation.
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher

    Nancy Ostryniec Cross Scholarship

    Amount: $3,000
    Deadline: April 15
    Eligibility:
    • Must be a high school senior graduating from Fort LeBoeuf High School, Waterford, Pennsylvania residing, at the time of graduation, in LeBoeuf Township, Mill Village Borough, Summit Township, Waterford Borough or Waterford Township.
    • An advisory committee will award scholarships based on standardized tests, evidence of good character, motivation, ability and potential, participation in extracurricular or community activities, teacher recommendation and financial need.

    DefIANt Scholars Program

    Amount: $1,000

    Eligibility:
    • Intended for students with a disability. The goal is to help aid the disabled community in an attempt to break down barriers, stereotypes, and misconceptions inside the classroom.

    • This scholarship benefits a four year member of Seneca High School girls’ basketball team who exemplifies the positive attitude and strong team ethic that Sophie demonstrated in her life every day.

    Judith A. Dormann “Good Apple” Scholarship

    Amount: Determined annually; Renewable as long as GPA is 2.5

    • This scholarship is designed to inspire, encourage and assist a student who may not otherwise consider post high school education or training. The goal is to provide an award to a student who is a good person in general, someone who works hard, displays a good work ethic and exhibits person initiative in a positive way.

    Erie County Emergency Medical Services Scholarship

    Amount: Full Tuition
    Deadline: Open
    Eligibility:
    • This scholarship, established by the County of Erie, will benefit Erie County residents who meet the designated selection criteria and intend to pursue a successful career or volunteerism in the field of emergency medical service, in Erie County, Pennsylvania. This scholarship fund is supported by the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund grant awarded to Erie County by the U.S Department of Treasury. Eligible applicants include disproportionately impacted groups (minorities, women, New Americans, inner city, or rural residents), income qualifying individuals, and/or individuals who have experienced career or academic displacement due to COVID-19. Scholarship recipients who complete EMT, AEMT, or EMR Courses must work or volunteer in the field of EMS in Erie County for at least one year; otherwise the scholarship must be paid back in its entirety. Scholarship recipients who complete Paramedic coursework must work or volunteer in the field of EMS in Erie County for at least two years; otherwise 50% of the scholarship must be paid back. Additionally, a scholarship recipient can fulfill these requirements by volunteering with a volunteer fire department or EMS agency in Erie County for one year (EMT, AEMT,EMR) or two years for paramedic training.

    • The student must have an excellent record of scholastic achievement, strong individual motivation, a sound sense of citizenship, and a financial need which exceed his or her parents’ contribution.

    Erie Music Teachers Scholarship Fund

    Amount: Determined Annually

    • ​Applicant's music teacher must be a member of the Erie Music Teachers Association.

    Robert Whitney Erie County Farm Bureau Agricultural Scholarship

    Amount: Determined annually
    Deadline: April 15
    Eligibility:
    • The scholarship is intended to benefit the children and grandchildren of Erie County Farm Bureau regular or associate members in good standing. Said members must have consistently paid the Farm Bureau’s dues for a minimum of two consecutive years.
    • The scholarship candidate must be pursuing post-secondary education, which includes vocational school. While all candidates are eligible, preference will be given to those students whose primary major or field is agriculturally related.

    The NWPA Food Council Scholarship

    Amount: $2,500 (renewable- up to 4 years)
    Deadline: April 15
    Eligibility:
    • This award is intended to benefit graduates in good standing of any Erie County, PA high school, and will support the pursuit of post-secondary education or training. Such training may include a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree, or industry-specific certification.
    • While all candidates are eligible, preference may be given to those students who are working in and/or pursuing careers in the food/grocery or convenience store industries.
    • Candidates must have a least a 3.0 GPA

    The Goodwine Scholarship

    Amount: Determined Annually

    Eligibility:
    • Applicant must be a graduating senior from a public or private high school in Erie County, Pennsylvania.
    • Students must intend to pursue a two-year Associate Degree or Certificate (not a baccalaureate degree).
    • Must have a lifetime GPA of at least 2.0 at graduation

    The James V. Gray Memorial Scholarship

    Amount: $1,000

    Eligibility:
    • This is a need-based scholarship, established in honor and memory of James Vincent Gray, an Erie School District teacher and coach.
    • Must be an Erie School District graduating senior who has been accepted into an accredited two or four-year college or university.
    • Must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA

    • Must be pursuing a two-year degree in an engineering related field
    • Applicants must have a G.P.A. between 3.0 and 3.5
    • Preference will be given to students attending an institution in Erie or Crawford County.

    Lindsay Graygo Memorial Scholarship

    Amount: Determined Annually
    Deadline: April 15
    Eligibility:
    • Awarded to a graduating female senior attending McDowell High School, Erie, PA.
    • Must be accepted and planning to attend a campus of the Penn State University.
    • Preference will be given to those who have given at least 50 hours community service work and who have been active participants in McDowell High School athletics and arts programs.
    • This is an academic scholarship based on merit as evidenced by high school transcripts and standard aptitude test scores.

    Walter and Florence Guelcher Scholarship

    Amount: Determined Annually
    Deadline: April 29
    Eligibility:
    • Must be students of Gannon University enrolled in an Engineering Program, and are required to have graduated from a high school in Erie County, PA.
    • Students applying must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be active in their faith, and exhibit high moral character.

    The James R. Herdzik Memorial Scholarship Award

    Amount: $4,000

    Eligibility:
    • This need-based scholarship is available to Erie School District graduating seniors who have been accepted into an accredited four-year college or university. The successful candidate’s application must demonstrate the volunteer spirit and care for community that Jim exemplified throughout his life.

    Eligibility:
    • Must be a full-time employee or dependent of full-time employee of Erie Insurance
    • College Students must be full-time at an accredited university, college, graduate or professional school and a minimum of a 2.75 GPA to be considered
