Grant Instrumental to Therapy Program

Music therapy is a unique and effective treatment for children with psychosocial, cognitive and communication needs. Many children with these types of needs struggle to open up and talk about their problems. Harborcreek Youth Services, in collaboration with Mercyhurst University recently received a grant for the creation of a Music Therapy program.

“Our hope is for children to find their voice and to be able to talk about their relationships with their parents, their fears or their goals for the future,” said Sam Krahe, Music Therapist for Harborcreek Youth Services. “To do that in a musical setting is often easier than sitting across from someone in a chair just talking about it.”

No other organization in northwest Pennsylvania provides music therapy services for children in need. Krahe currently provides services to 15 children, and he hopes to vastly expand in the upcoming year to change the lives of so many children.
