The Erie Community Foundation awarded almost ½ Million Dollars in scholarships to 260 students!!
Students from grade school through law school can earn scholarships to pursue their education by speaking to guidance counselors and seeking scholarships established at The Erie Community Foundation. For the 2007/2008 school year, The Erie Community Foundation presented $489,175 to 260 students at a special Scholarship Reception at the Erie Cruise Boat Terminal. Senator Jane M. Earll was the guest speaker, who told the students and their guests how her educational opportunities led her to the interesting and esteemed career she holds today.
“In today’s world, scholarships are increasingly important for students and quite popular with donors,” said Michael Batchelor, president of The Erie Community Foundation. There are now 45 different scholarship funds within The Erie Community Foundation, 16 in the Corry Community Foundation and two at the North East Community Foundation as well as Union City Community Foundation, for a total of 65 scholarships.
Each scholarship is distinct and recipients are selected in accordance with criteria established by the donor. At the event, donors were recognized and had an opportunity to meet scholarship recipients and their parents. The Erie Community Foundation publicizes the availability of scholarships through local high school guidance offices.
“The best and brightest of local students will be on display at this reception, and these scholarships will launch their careers,” Batchelor added. “We hope that more than a few of these students return to their hometowns and, at some future date, create their own scholarship to benefit the next generation of deserving students,” he said.
